With the growing popularity of ground blinds, hunters now have more options for bagging their prey. Although some hunters claim that hunting from an elevated stand is far superior to hunting from the ground, there are plenty of hunters who have found that keeping their feet on the ground and their head protected from the rain is much more comfortable and just as successful as tree stand hunting.

The key to successful ground blind hunting is staying hidden. Since you’re right on eye level with your game, you need to make the extra effort to camouflage your blind and set it up in a place where the animals are less likely to approach the blind head on. Use dead branches and brush to camouflage the top and sides of the blind.

One of the benefits of ground blind hunting is that you stay warmer in cold weather and get protection from the wind, rain, snow, and other elements. While most tree stand hunters pack up when the rain moves in, you can stay warm and dry in your hunting blind in almost any weather.

Because of the size and concealment that a ground blind offers, you can pack in more stuff, video the hunt from inside the blind, and bring along a friend or family member. Being able to move around inside the tent without giving yourself away makes it easier to wait and allows you to bring along fidgety children.

When you or someone you know has a close call with a tree stand accident, you might think twice about climbing into a tree again. A ground blind lets you stay safe while you hunt. It also makes it possible for disabled hunters to stay hidden and lets older hunters continue to hunt well into their later years.

“Great pop up blind! Setup in less than a minute! Closing it up is fast and simple, plus the backpack provides storage and portability! Spacious inside and will allow two hunters ample room for seating, cameras and gear when bow hunting as well as rifle hunting.”
- P. Hager

“It’s your standard pop up blind for a good price! If you’re 5ft. 7in. or shorter, you should be comfortably able to hang out inside. Anyone taller than that may want to get a bigger pop up. It comes with a carry bag, 2 ext. poles, 8 stakes, and 4 tie downs! I find that the camo pattern could be used in a variety of terrain. It blends in well amongst the green cedar trees and mesquite scrub.”
- O. Gonzalez

“I bought it and gave it as a gift to my brother. He loved it. Easy up and easy down!”
- Amy B.

“What a great, easy-to-set-up blind for hunting any type of game you want to stay concealed for. I dropped a 12-point, 160-pound deer from about 25 yards with a bow from this blind 2 days ago. It was roomy and comfortable and blended in.

Little problem in getting it back in its bag; it’s tricky, but can be done easily with 2 people. It is light and packable into the woods. If you are not in the mood for dragging your tree climber all the time, this is a super alternative, especially in the cold and wind!

Happy hunting!”
- Rich U.

“Delivery was quick. Setup was easy. Just had 2 inches of rain plus high winds and all was dry inside and found it as I left it before the storm came. The price was right, even cheaper than most stores. Gave it four stars because of the hassle of taking it down. Had a little buddy heater in it when it was 24 degrees outside and stayed warm. I would recommend this to a friend. Enough room for my daughter and I with the right kind of chairs.”
- Alan Caines

“This is a great blind. I ordered this blind just before the black powder hunt in Oklahoma. I received the blind and the webbing where the poles went to hold up the roof, were miss sewn. I made contact with KillZone, who sold me the blind, and informed Rod L. of my misfortune. With his help, and only one week until my hunt started, I was able to get my replacement. I was unable to set the blind up to let it air out for the two days; however, I did have it in time to make my hunt. I have to commend KillZone for 3-day shipping me the blind and making all of that work. If you buy this blind, you will love the camo pattern, ease of setup, and the ability to pack it in its backpack style case.”
- G. Gandy

“The hunting blind I ordered arrived promptly. Terrific rig: easy to set up, easy to collapse. I am very satisfied with the purchase.”

Want to keep both feet on the ground for your next hunt? Whether you’ve had a close call with a tree stand or you just don’t like hunting 8 feet up, a pop up ground blind can give you the advantage you need to stay concealed while you hunt from the ground. Here are some tips on how to hunt successfully from a ground blind.

Placement

The best way to hide your ground blind is to place it in front of a backdrop that is taller and wider than the blind—for example, a clump of trees or thick, tall brush. The stark outline of a hunting blind highlighted against the sky is a dead giveaway. Try to break up the outline by blending it in with the landscape and by filling the brush loops with natural vegetation.

If you are hunting on private land, get permission to set up the blind early. Setting up your blind at least two weeks early allows deer and other game to get used to the blind. By the time you are ready to hunt, they’ll be comfortable with the ground blind and unsuspecting of your presence.

Camouflage

If your ground blind is brand new, let it air out before your first hunt. Get the factory smell out of it, and let it naturalize. For more effective camouflage, try mudding up the blind to dull any shine and make it blend in better with the landscape.

Visibility

Camouflage mesh lets you see out without letting game see you. It also prevents the “black hole” effect that happens when the window is wide open. A gaping black void in the midst of brush and trees can spook your game. When the sun is low on the horizon and shining directly on your blind, it can be difficult to see out through the mesh. For a clearer view, let down a corner of the mesh for a peek hole.

Practice

Practice setting up your ground blind before opening day. You don’t want your first time setting up the blind to be in the dark. Practice taking the blind down, as well. If you stay out past sunset, you’ll be glad you did. Fumbling around with a ground blind in the dark is hard enough without having to read the instructions at the same time.

“Easy to set up – quick to break down and great price…did tear at two spots but more my fault about where I set up and the limbs puncturing the fabric…great sight lines and a comfortable hunting blind.”

“Great product and awesome buying experience. Product is as perfectly advertised and of high quality. I looked at Ameristep and a few other brands and I am quite happy with this instead at a much better price.”
- John H.

“I was debating whether to buy this one or the single person chair. I have two boys who I am starting to take hunting when it’s not too cold or they have to get up too early. (Their conditions!) Anyway I was afraid the two person would be too heavy to carry along with my backpack and gun when I was by myself. I used it for the first time Thanksgiving week and was very impressed. I carried it along with my other gear with no problem. The only thing that I didn’t like was the backpack style straps are too far apart to sit on your shoulders. This wasn’t much problem though as I already had on a backpack. I just slung one strap over my shoulder and it carried very well like a duffel bag. My brother in-law has the single seat model and after seeing the roominess of mine wishes he had purchased the two man also. As far as concealment, I had a deer walk down the trail within twenty feet of me until I made a noise and spooked it. Arrgh! Overall I think it is a great value for the money!!”
- “Desprtsman”

“They shipped to me twice; the first time I did not receive the item (lost or stolen mail) but I made them aware of it and they shipped me another ASAP. I love the blind…high quality…going to work out great for Kentucky spring turkey season. Gobble gobble.”

Both are easy to set up and take down. Taking down a pop up blind takes a little practice at first, but once you learn how to do it, you can get it packed up in no time. For a hub blind, simply pop the roof up, then all four sides. For a pop up blind, after you set up the blind, you will need to insert fiberglass rods into the pockets inside the tent. This will reinforce the blind.

Size

Hub blinds have a bigger footprint than pop up blinds. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. The good part is the extra room it gives you inside the blind—both elbow room and height. Bowhunters can draw without bumping the back wall, and gun hunters can move the gun without interference. The larger space means you can bring along your spouse and kids, and you won’t have to crouch over as much when you stand. The (possible) negative side of a larger blind is that it’s harder to camouflage in areas with low-lying or dense brush. Pop up blinds work better in areas where there is little room to set up a blind.

Hub style blinds have plenty of elbow room.

Door Style

Because of the hub design on a hub style blind, the door is smaller and in the corner of the blind. Pop up blinds have a full size door, which makes getting in and out with all of your gear a whole lot easier.

Durability

Hub blinds are the sturdiest type of portable blind, although neither hub blinds nor pop up blinds are designed to be exposed to the elements for more than a few days. Tree limbs, strong winds, heavy snow, and other elements can damage the blind.

“This is a really nice product for the price. Fits myself and my two 8 year old sons easily. Nice full size door. Nice shoot through windows on all 4 sides. Sets and tears down in seconds.”

“My wife ordered this blind for me for the upcoming deer season. I put the blind next to a field at a food plot and have had does pass by me at 10 yards. And a buck had rub a tree 5 yards behind it. The reason I gave it 4 stars is a little tight when you draw your bow at full draw but still works well. And for the gun hunter will hold 2 people comfortable.”
- J. Osborne

“Fast shipping, a lot earlier than expected, easy to put up. -1star because it was a little rough to take down if you’re not good with instructions, but all in all great product, well worth the money, and like I said they were great with the shipping of it.”

“This just came and it’s better in person than in the picture. The only negative I can see with it is the shoulder straps on the carrier are too small for an average man with a heavy hunting suit on. Will have to find a way to modify it if I want to carry it like a back pack. Easy up and down. Enough room for me and my bow. Would recommend it to friends.”

“Awesome deal! There are way more expensive pop-up blinds out there that are not as good as this one. Not to mention very light and portable and a breeze to set up and take down.
Turret XL Hunting Blind Reviews

“I think this is great blind for the price. I purchased this blind because my daughter is now old enough to come with me deer hunting and my old blind is too small for two people. The Turret XL has lots of room. Compared to my pop up blind I find it easier to set up and take down.”
- “Tigger”

“Had the Turret XL Zero Detect in the backyard and it seemed to blend right in with the sand and grass, set it up in my hunting woods this evening and I think it does a great job of blending there as well! Loving the Zero Detect so far!”
- Travis C.

“Glad I bought it. Great blind. This is the third blind I have owned. It is the best.
Fast to set up. Lots of room inside. Great camo. Great windows.

Two things bad: cheap stakes too short. Need two tie downs on each corner for better wind stability.”

Knowing where and when to set up your hunting blind can make the difference between a successful hunt and a disappointing season. The following tips will help you make the most of your hunting blind in order to increase your chances for a successful hunt.

Hunting Blind Setup

Set the ground blind up ahead of time to let the deer get used to it, up to a week in advance. Once the deer become accustomed to its presence, they will no longer view it as a threat.

Keep a dark backdrop behind you. Even if the blind’s design allows you to open the windows all around the blind, it’s probably better to keep the window behind you closed. A dark backdrop will swallow your silhouette and prevent deer from spotting you.

Since deer can balk at the “black hole” created when the window and mesh are open, it’s best to keep the mesh up, or with just a corner hanging down for a shooting lane. The mesh on KillZone blinds is camouflaged to match the walls of the blind and diminish the “black hole” effect.

Hunting Blind Placement

One of the benefits of a portable ground blind is that you can easily move it from one location to another. Since a location that produces well early in the season may turn cold by the end of the season, you may need to move the blind as the season progresses in order to adjust to the deer’s movement.

Look for trail intersections, water holes, cut lines, and field edges that are heavily traveled. This is where your scouting will come in handy. Knowing where to set up your blind depends on your knowledge of the deer’s movement, which may change drastically from pre-season to post-season.

The recommended distance from the trail to the blind also depends on your shooting range with a bow, rifle, shotgun, or muzzleloader. For setting up near a trail intersection, locate the blind about 20 yards from the trail intersection for shots within close range. If you’re worried about the deer spotting you, set up further away. Wherever you locate the blind, make sure you have clear shooting lanes and visibility.

If you’re frustrated by the lack of game you’re seeing, don’t hesitate to move to another spot. Changing up your game plan may be just what you needed to bring home the jerky.

2 Person Chair Blind Review

“This is the easiest pop up hunting blind I have ever used. It takes minutes to setup and minutes to take down. I have used other pop ups in the past that would go up in a flash but then you would spend the next several hours looking like an idiot trying to take it down and put it back together. The KillZone Hunting Blind is the best one I’ve used so far. The other features I like are the the built in chairs and the adjustable windows. This makes it nice when going in the field—you don’t have to carry all this gear to accommodate your blind; it all back packs in the KillZone. The adjustable windows open up nice for more room if you’re bow hunting, and they can be reduced down to allow less visibility by your game. The one downside I find is that the zippers to the windows can be noisy. This can be corrected by taping them up. I’m glad I got the 2 chair for more room. I am just over 6 feet tall and 200 lbs. The 1 chair would have been too small. Very happy with this purchase.”
