A gun cleaning kit includes most of the basic accessories you need to clean almost any gun.

In order to clean your gun, you’ll need a few basic accessories. You can either purchase these separately or as a gun cleaning kit. If you have more than one type of gun, a kit will be cheaper and give you the most versatility in cleaning all the guns that you own or plan to purchase in the future.

What you need in a basic gun cleaning kit:

• Bottle of solvent
• Bottle of lubricating oil
• Rod
• Slotted patch holder
• Brass wire brush (specifically sized for your gun)
• Mop (specifically sized for your gun)
• Adapters (for use on all gun types and sizes)
• Patches
• Nitrile gloves
• Safety glasses

Bore Brushes

The bore cleaning brushes and mops must be sized specifically for your gun, rifle, or shotgun. If the brush is too large, it won’t fit in the barrel. If it’s too small, it won’t clean the barrel properly. Three types of bore cleaning brushes are available: bronze, plastic, and stainless steel.

Bronze cleaning brushes are the best for most types of cleaning. They come standard with a gun cleaning kit. The bronze bristles are soft enough to protect the barrel from scratches but stiff enough to get the barrel good and clean. Plastic brushes are used with a highly powerful solvent designed to dissolve copper fouling. Bronze brushes would dissolve if used with such a powerful solvent. Stainless steel brushes don’t clean the barrel as thoroughly as bronze brushes. Since stainless steel is a harsher metal, the bristles are looped to prevent scratching the inside of the barrel. Unfortunately, the looped bristles don’t clean as well as straight bristles.

Skin and Eye Protection

When handling solvent, protect yourself from possible spills, spraying, or splashing by wearing gloves and safety glasses. The harsh chemicals in the solvent can etch prescription lenses, so even if you wear glasses, we still recommend another form of eye protection. No matter how careful you are with the solvent, all it takes is one spray in your eye to damage your sight.

For skin protection, we recommend nitrile gloves. Latex gloves are cheaper than nitrile, but they tend to fall apart faster when exposed to solvent. Plus they easily get caught on the mechanical parts of the gun. Nitrile gloves will hold up better than latex. The gloves should be tight enough so that you don’t have extra glove material hanging off the end of your fingertips. Gloves that are too big will only get in the way.

If you want to keep your gun looking sharp and working smoothly, it’s important to know how to properly clean and store it. Here are a few tips on cleaning and storing your firearm, including tips for long-term and short-term storage.

Safety

Before cleaning or storing any firearm, check to make sure it is unloaded. Keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction when you check to see if the gun is loaded. Never take someone’s word that the firearm is unloaded. If you are handling the firearm, you are responsible to check for yourself.

Waterproof

The gun and gun case must be completely dry and free of moisture before storage. Any moisture inside the gun or case will be trapped inside when you close the case. Any moisture trapped inside is bad news for your firearm.

If your case is waterproof, it’s even more important to check for moisture before storing your gun. Since waterproof gun cases are sealed to keep moisture out, they can also trap moisture inside, since there is no way for the moisture to evaporate. The gun must be completely dry before storing it in a waterproof case.

Short Term Storage

Clean and oil your firearm before storing it in a soft or hard sided case. Make sure the firearm is completely dry before closing the case.

Long Term Storage

Follow the recommended guidelines for cleaning and oiling your firearm in preparation for long-term storage. This usually includes a thorough cleaning—so that the gun is free of all lead and copper residue—and a coat of long-lasting penetrating oil. Slip the firearm into a gun sleeve for extra protection, if desired. You may wish to use a rust inhibitor for protection against rust and corrosion during long-term storage.

Ideally, you should clean your gun after every use.

Factoring In the Elements

Cleaning your gun is especially important in moist, humid areas or if you shoot in rainy or snowy conditions. Extreme weather conditions can be hard on your gun, resulting in corrosion, moisture damage, rust, and other damage if you don’t take the proper steps to care for your gun. Always dry your gun thoroughly after use if there is any sign of condensation or moisture on the metal parts of the gun.

Preparing Your Gun for Storage

Special care should be taken to clean the gun and prepare it for storage before long-term storage. Storing the gun properly will help to protect it from damage; however, even during long-term storage, you should inspect, clean, and oil your guns every few months to keep them in the best condition.

Taking Your Gun Out of Storage

After a long period of storage, inspect the gun thoroughly and clean the bore before use. Always make sure the gun is unloaded before cleaning and all ammunition is removed from the cleaning area. Follow all safety procedures for cleaning your gun.
