Scent Control: 3 Ways a Hunting Blind Can Eliminate Odor

The 360 hunting blind comes with scent-blocking carbon and a protective ground skirt.

The 360 hunting blind comes with scent-blocking carbon and a protective ground skirt to eliminate odors.

  1. Carbon Interior
  2. A number of ground blinds on the market, including KillZone blinds, have a scentless carbon protected interior to eliminate odor and increase your chances of hunting success. Combined with other forms of scent protection, the carbon layer reduces the chances of getting busted in a ground blind.

Carbon protection offers an advantage that other scent eliminators cannot: while all that scent-block sprays and unscented soaps can do is neutralize or mask odor, activated carbon absorbs odor and retains it.

  3. Ground Skirt
  4. What’s the purpose of a ground skirt? It might just look like excess material, but a ground skirt serves two important purposes: 1) It keeps your smell inside, and 2) It keeps wind and rain outside. With the extra scent block that a ground skirt provides, you stay more concealed, and with the extra weather protection, you stay drier, warmer, and more comfortable in your hunting blind.

  5. Wind Block
  6. Since a ground blind provides shelter from the wind, it also helps keep your scent from wafting under the noses of your game. If the wind suddenly shifts directions and you’re out in the open, it could blow your cover; but if the wind suddenly shifts and you’re in a ground blind, your scent is blocked by the protective shelter around you.

Hunting Camo Pattern FAQs

Hunting Blind with Zero Detect Camo

Hunting Blind with Zero Detect Camo

What type of camouflage do I need for my hunting blind?

If you predominantly hunt one type of cover (for example, in a tree stand in a stand of oaks in late November), a specialized hunting camo pattern will provide optimal camouflage. But if you need a hunting blind camo pattern that works in several types of cover, an all-purpose pattern is your best bet. All-purpose camo generally uses an open pattern that blends in across multiple backgrounds and hunting seasons. It’s versatile enough to be used in spring or fall, in woods, marshland, crop fields, or grasslands.

What type of camo works well for early season hunting? Late season hunting?

Camo patterns with predominantly green hues blend in well with the new growth that takes in early spring. For late season hunting, look for darker patterns with multiple shades of brown and tan, broken up by small highlights of red, orange, or green.

What is the difference between Zero Detect and Autumn Wooded Oak camo?

The Zero-Detect camo pattern is designed to work in woodland terrain, brush and scrub. The green hues in the pattern blend in well with spring foliage and the brown hues provide coverage for fall foliage and late-season hunting. The white highlights add contrast and depth to the pattern.

The Autumn Wooded Oak camo pattern is designed primarily for wooded landscapes and fall foliage but can also be brushed in to match a variety of seasons and terrain. The various shades of brown, orange, yellow, and green make this pattern versatile enough for a wide range of foliage.

Soft and Hard Sided Rifle Gun Cases

Soft rifle cases are lightweight and easy to carry.

Everybody knows it’s important to protect your rifle or shotgun with a gun case. Whether you’re carrying your gun outside on a rainy day or you’re transporting it in the back of the truck, a hard-sided or soft-sided case can protect against moisture and impacts. Both soft and hard rifle cases offer protection and security, but they differ in style and function.

Soft Sided

A soft gun case is easily portable and lightweight. Because it is lighter and less bulky than a hard case, it works well for transporting your gun out to the shooting range or to your hunting stand.

Soft cases come in a variety of materials, including nylon, canvas, cordura, polyester, neoprene, and leather. The inside is usually lined with a soft, scratch-resistant synthetic material. Some cases are available with camouflage, so you can drop the case on the ground and it blends right in. Waterfowl cases are designed to float, so if the case falls into the water, it won’t sink to the bottom. Also, some cases are waterproof to protect from rain and moisture or from water splashing in the boat blind. A zippered soft rifle case can be locked with a padlock for an extra measure of security.

Hard Sided

A hard rifle case offers the best level of protection and security. The hard exterior shell protects your gun from impacts, accidents, and sliding around in the back of the pickup. The materials used range from lightweight aluminum to classic wood to a wide range of composite materials. Shooters choose the type of material based on its strength, weight, and visual appeal. The inside of the case is lined with thick, dense foam that cradles the rifle and keeps it from shifting around inside the case.

Some hard rifle cases are waterproof for extra weather protection; however, a case that keeps moisture out can also keep moisture in, so make sure the gun is completely dry before storing it in the case to prevent rust. Hard-sided cases are required for airline travel, so if you fly to your hunting destination, make sure you have a case that meets airline requirements. Hard cases are also a bonus because the combination of a tough exterior and a secure lock keeps your gun safe from thieves, both in the airport and at home.

  • Made from nylon, polyester, canvas, neoprene, or leather
  • Some are camouflaged, floating, and/or waterproof

  • Doubles as a seat cushion
  • Best protection and security

This rifle case is very good; it protects my M-4 well. The magazine pouches are very convenient and allows you to put many accessories or equipment. What Size Hunting Blind Do I Need?

The Turret XL hunting blind is 6 feet square (hub to hub) and 66 inches tall.

The Turret XL hunting blind is 6 feet square (hub to hub) and 66 inches tall.

When it comes to choosing a hunting blind, bigger is not always better. There are pros and cons to using a big blind, just as there are with a small blind. To figure out what size blind is best for you, there are a few things you need to consider first.

How many people are you hunting with?

If you hunt with other people, you’ll obviously need a bigger blind to fit everyone. Bigger blinds are great for bringing along the kids or grandkids or hunting with the guys. Keep in mind that you’ll need enough room for the extra chairs and gear, as well as the extra people.

How much gear do you have?

If you’re loaded down with gear, filming the hunt, or hunting with a buddy, you’ll appreciate the extra room that a big ground blind has to offer.

If bowhunting, how much room do you need at full draw?

You want to be able to get off a clean shot without feeling cramped. The ground blind should be big enough to allow you to draw without hitting the back wall. You want your full attention to be on the shot, not on the cramped size of the blind.

Do you want to be able to stand up and move around?

When you’re in the blind all day, it helps to be able to stretch your legs once in awhile without worrying about giving away your hideout. With a larger ground blind, you have room to stretch and the blackout interior keeps your shadow under wraps.

What is the vegetation like?

A bigger blind takes up more space, so if you’re hunting in an area with dense trees and undergrowth, you may have a harder time finding a good spot to set up the blind. Also, a taller blind can be more difficult to hide, especially in areas with sparse vegetation. It casts a longer shadow and draws more attention than a smaller profile blind.
